Corrugated Roofing Options – Metal

Corrugated metal roofing is now a popular option for commercial property owners and some residential owners. It has proven to be a secure, resilient roofing material choice since the process for corrugating metal was first developed. The strength, durability and life expectancy of metal roofs can be increased significantly using the corrugating process. Most of these kinds of roofing sheets are produced from different varieties of steel and sometimes coated with range of substances before use. Corrugated iron roofing is also used frequently. Metal roofing materials ensure that a lightweight roof is possible while still retaining a very sturdy structure. Other materials are available such as corrugated plastic roofing but metal will often provide more strength and longevity.

Galvanized and Stainless Steel

The primary types of corrugated roof sheets are produced from either galvanized or stainless steel. Galvanized steel has been used for a long time due to its low cost and excellent physical structure. A corrugated metal roof made from galvanized steel is a popular choice in many industrial buildings. The major advantage of using galvanized steel over other metal roofing materials is the resistance to corrosion which is achieved by coating the metal with another substance such as zinc. This greatly improves the ability of a roof to withstand the elements over an extended period of time although the coating can start to look unattractive after a number of years.

A Stainless corrugated steel roofing system provides natural resistance to corrosion. It does not need to be treated and so its appearance does not tend to deteriorate over time as galvanized metal roofing would. A stainless steel corrugated roofing sheet is slightly weaker than a galvanized one so it is important to decide whether looks or a strong structure are most important for the needs of your individual property. The stainless steel option would not be as suitable in environments which experience frequent and violent storms.

Corrugated roof panels produced from more specialised materials are always becoming available but usually at higher costs. Most will continue to use steel as a base in conjunction with a variety of different alloys which produce resistance to different kinds and intensities of corrosion. The stainless or galvanized metal roofing options will be suitable for the needs of most property owners but your individual circumstances may mean that investing extra money in more modern specialised corrugated roofing panels will be sensible.
