Whether you’re using it in a kid’s room or an adult’s bedroom nautical lighting can seem a little bit juvenile. However, you can make it seem luxurious and elegant just depending on the pattern that you decide to go with. This can work with a lot of different age groups and can even add a theme into a basic room with office blinds.

You might have a lot of success just by going with a solid color. You can mix and match in different bedding ensembles to get silvers, grays, and slate blues. This is really going to mimic water and then your theme isn’t going to be as literal.

Another option for nautical bedding is to go with pattern pieces. Really depending on the age determines how liberal you want to be with your design. If you’re working in a younger child’s room then you can probably get away with a lot of sail boat kind of themes. If you’re working in a teenager’s space then you might just want to go with a subtle starfish pattern. You also want to make sure that the graphics are larger the older the child is. For instance in a teenager’s room this could just be one really large star fish outline on a duvet cover. It doesn’t even have to be in the traditional tan or gold color palette. Instead, you could just have a lot of fun by trying to create this on a blue background with a bright white for more of a contemporary feeling that is still going to give that beach vibe.

You can also really play around with tie dye. In this case you should go for more of an ombre effect. This is popular in the fashion world, but you can also find it in the design world. This is where one color really fades into the other quite smoothly. This can mimic water quite beautifully.
