It’s funny how such an everyday object as doors can change our perception should we look at it more closely. Perhaps we take doors for granted, but yet they are such an important part of a home. They are designed to allow those who live in a home to keep out unwanted visitors, the weather, and sometimes to let the warmth of sunlight in. Patio doors certainly encompass these three functions, and more besides. They add value to a home by making a room more open, and making the garden more accessible, they add beauty and interest as well.

Large open up into nature, thus turning a garden into a functional part of the home rather than just a feature outside of it. They are beneficial, for reasons of wellbeing and health, and have proven popular with homeowners around the world. By being both elegant and having large windows to admit the light they address all the aesthetic needs, while at the same time being secure and weather tight. They are a great compliment to other additions such as garden decking.

To main varieties exist, they are French style doors which feature two facing hinged doors that typically open outwards, but sometimes open inwards, and sliding doors. Sliding doors are on rollers that allow them slide out of the way. Both have their own security issues, French doors can sometimes be flimsy and easy to breach by brute force, whereas sliding doors are weakest at their locking mechanism. Both should be fitted and then secured with extra methods, sliding bolts at the tops and bottoms will help fasten them in place.

Typically sliding doors have wider glass panels and accommodate more light, whereas French doors are more elegant. Both are available in many materials including uPVC, metals, and wood. Each has advantages and disadvantages, from the rotting of wood, to the oxidisation of some metals and corrosion of others, uPVC can bend and crack or fade . That said, generally uPVC is the cheapest material but also the longest lasting. Because it does not require painting it is very maintenance free in comparison to wood and metal. Wood certainly finds its way into usage in plenty of homes, though uPVC patio doors are fast becoming ubiquitous. Metals on the other hand are used in ultra modern settings.

A nice set of patio doors can certainly completely change the feel of a room, and are worth exploring. They help open up a space and create a living area that is open, beautiful, and yet protected from the elements.
